What a waste

THERE is no denying that work to turn around service levels and stamp out corruption in the Department of Home Affairs is beginning to show results.

THERE is no denying that work to turn around service levels and stamp out corruption in the Department of Home Affairs is beginning to show results.

This development is in contrast with times when the mere mention of the department would open the floodgates of derision over inept service.

Rising public confidence in the department is now thankfully supported by oft-heard praise of the gradual turn-around.

But the fly in the ointment of this happy saga is this week's revelation by the department of 500 000 IDs uncollected by the public and which have to be destroyed to avoid fraud.

This is a disappointment since the wastage - at huge cost to the taxpayer - is needless, given the time and effort put in by Home Affairs staff to process the paper trail.

Those responsible for such a deluge of wastage must hang their heads in shame.
