AN Aliwal North teacher who is accused of raping a 13-year-old Grade 8 pupil was scheduled to apply for bail yesterday, Eastern Cape police said.

Inspector Victor Bojabotseha said the 36-year-old teacher was arrested on Monday at Dukathole township near Aliwal North.

"It all began two weeks ago when the teacher allegedly professed his undying love for the girl. She then stopped going to school because she was scared of him."

Bojabotseha said on Saturday the girl was passing a tuck shop with her friends on their way to church when they met the teacher.

"He allegedly demanded that she get into his car, promising to drop her off at the church. He then drove off in a different direction and the girl could not alert passersby as the car had tinted windows,"Bojabotseha said.

The man took the girl to a deserted area where he allegedly raped her and instructed her not to tell anybody about what had happened, he said.

The girl laid charges on Monday and the teacher was arrested.

He made his first appearance in court on Wednesday and was then remanded in custody. - Sapa
