The department has topped all others in terms of the budget allocated to them for infrastructure development in the 2010-11 financial year.
Announcing the provincial budget in the provincial legislature in Lebowakgomo yesterday provincial treasury MEC Saad Cachalia said the maintenance of roads and improvement of infrastructure was high on the provincial government's priority list in this financial year.
He said the budget for total infrastructure amounted to R19,3billion.
The roads and transport department was allocated R1,999 billion compared with education's R1,022 billion, the second highest in terms of an infrastructure development budget.
The department has been delaying in re-building the two bridges that collapsed between Louis Trichardt and Thohoyandou, and between Nzhelele and Thohoyandou, respectively, due to lack of resources.
