As part of the celebrations Bafana Bafana will play an international friendly against Namibia at the new Moses Mabhida Stadium on Wednesday night.
Local Organising Committee chief executive Danny Jordaan said Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe would also be in Durban for the festivities.
Other dignitaries expected to attend include African soccer greats Roger Milla, Hossam Hassan, Patrick Mboma, Jay Jay Okocha, Doctor Khumalo and Mark Fish.
"We will also have a conference and banquet in Durban. Moses Mabhida Stadium will also be unveiled as an official 2010 World Cup venue," Jordaan said.
World Cup organising committee convener Issa Hayatou said they were impressed by South Africa's preparations for the tournament. He congratulated LOC chairperson Irvin Khoza, Jordaan and all the people working on World Cup projects for a job well done.
"It will be a unique African World Cup, we are confident that it will be a wonderful tournament that all the people of the world will be proud of."
Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke and Jordaan will join the 120 local and foreign journalists who begin a tour today to the 10 match venues.
