RELATIVELY inexperienced boxing trainers Vuyani Bungu and Colin Nathan could fall by the wayside if they fail to guide their charges Zolani Tete and Hekkie Budler to victories against Filipino foes Richard Garcia and Juanito Rubillar this weekend.

Bungu is a former IBF junior flyweight world champion who has been named in the Guinness Book of Recordsafter defending his world title an unparalleled 13 times.

As a trainer, Bungu is assisted by his younger brother Dudu, a former top contender in the flyweight division. Nathan is a former presenter of the famed television programme Simunye Grooves. Nathan has never boxed.

"Last Born" Tete will bid for the No 1 spot in the IBF flyweight division against Garcia at Nasrec Arena tonight, while "Hexecutioner" Budler will oppose Rubillar for the vacant IBO junior flyweight title at Emperors Palace tomorrow night.

There will be no excuse for Bungu and Nathan to lose these fights as they knew about them since last month - ample time for any trainer to adequately prepare his charge for a fight.

They could have roped in seasoned trainers to help them. Surely, the two boxers' promoters, Branco Milenkovic and Rodney Berman, would have not objected to the added experience in preparations.

But Nathan opted for Phil Landman, a revered South African strength and conditioning trainer who is based Los Angeles, rather than a boxing strategist.

Progressive trainer Benny Pailman will help during the fight but it would have made much sense if he had been part of the preparations.

Bungu and Nathan both said they received the best possible support for their charges' fights, which might determine their future in the fisticuffs game. Tete is an explosive youngster, while Budler is a whirlwind performer.

They are both undefeated after 12 and 13 fights, respectively.

Interestingly, Tete and Budler have been with Bungu and Nathan since they cut their teeth in professional boxing in 2006 and 2007 respectively.

Milenkovic and Berman have delivered on their promises to stage fights that will appeal to boxing fans and they should be commended for this.

Bungu and Nathan never complain about anything, so the ball is in their court to deliver.
