Agnes Masondo, 78, died this week after she was discharged from the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Phoenix "because her condition was not improving".
She had been admitted to hospital a fortnight ago suffering from the stress-related sickness, a condition the family blames on the on-going eviction saga.
The 13-member Masondo family are crammed into the garage of the double-storey house that used to be their home. They were kicked out of the house in December 2008 when a "new owner" moved in and evicted them.
Sowetan wrote about their plight last Tuesday. They explained that their battle to get back the house owned by their father, a former policeman, had taken its toll on them and their mother, who eventually fell sick.
"She died in pain because she knew she was leaving us homeless," said Bathini Zuma, one of her daughters.
Masondo will be buried on Saturday. Zuma said all their attempts to reclaim the house had failed, though the police were currently investigating the reasons for theireviction.
An investigating officer, who asked not to be named, confirmed that there were irregularities in the manner in which the house was sold.
"I can confirm that investigations have revealed shocking operations by an individual. I can safely say that this person uses the same modus operandi in fraudulently selling people's homes under their noses," the official said.
