THE government is sticking to its claim that it created 482000 job opportunities last year.

Speaking at a press conference in Cape Town yesterday, Public Works Minister Geoff Doidge played down criticism by opposition parties that he had only created one or two days of work here and there - and passed this off as job creation.

Doidge pointed to the Zibambele rural roads maintenance project in Greytown, KwaZulu-Natal. He said the project, which began in 2000, had created 40000 of the 482000 jobs last year.

People employed by Zibambele work two days a week for a total of 100 days, he said.
