Medical team gears up for Cup

A TASK team has been appointed by the government to ensure that medical services are coordinated in all the provinces for the Fifa World Cup.

A TASK team has been appointed by the government to ensure that medical services are coordinated in all the provinces for the Fifa World Cup.

Local Organising Committee (LOC) chief medical officer Victor Ramathesele said the task team was led by Molefi Sefularo, the deputy minister of health.

Ramathesele said it consists of officials from the government, the armed forces, private health structures and the LOC.

"We had a meeting to assess our readiness a few weeks ago. All the fundamental issues were in place," he said. "If the tournament was held tomorrow, we would be able to deliver the best services.

"We have established a national operations centre to orchestrate the provision of services. In some areas the roads are not good, (limiting) access to clinics, but we hope that will be sorted out soon."

Ramathesele said they were encouraged by this week's thumbs up from Fifa, who said they were impressed by South Africa's readiness for the Cup.
