"One out of three motorists who drives here has had a car damaged by a pothole," says SupaQuick outlet manager Ibrahim Essop.
He says there has been a marked increase in the number of motorists coming into his shop to have cars fixed after they were damaged by potholes.
Essop says the cost of fixing the car and replacing tyres depend on the make of the car and the brand and size of tyres.
Essop says: "I have a client who had to replace tyres twice in one week. It cost him R8 000 since he has a luxury car.
"He was pretty angry."
Automobile Association (AA) spokesperson Gavin Ronald says: "Potholes are a big problem. We have had many clients calling in to claim and have their cars fixed recently.
"More people are having to repair their cars because of potholes and the costs are high."
The recent rains have worsened the situation.
Ronald says things are especially bad when roads are wet and one cannot see the pothole because it is filled with water.
Joburg Roads Agency spokesperson Thulani Makhubela says potholes will be attended to in all areas as part of the maintenance of roads in Johannesburg.
