Live gigs woo fans

THE venue was almost packed, with some people bringing along camping chairs to enjoy some of the most interesting musical sounds in the country.

The live music, held at Khutsong on the West Rand on Sunday, started as early as noon.

By that time the Xungu Restaurant was transformed into a sort of jazz village as some of the most interesting outfits went on stage.

This performance was the second leg of this initiative of the Gauteng government's department of sport, art, culture and recreation.

This particular leg of the performances was a follow-up of the show at Metsweding, Ekangala the community hall that saw the same bands kick off the music showcases on February 7.

The Ekangala community hall hosted Pebbles, 4 Seasons, Upbeat and a guest band from the area on a jazz showdown.

The performances enthralled the crowds, picking up from where the music showcases left off last year.

Hosted by the Gauteng department of sport, arts, culture and recreation, which is headed by MEC Nelisiwe Mbatha-Mthimkulu, the Puisano Live Music Project is aimed at promoting live music performances in communities and developing a culture of appreciating music.

Gauteng is known as the home of live music performances, where musicians live and embrace their art, and yet in the recent past it has become almost impossible to enjoy live jazz in an intimate venue.

So these performances are meant to plug these artistic gaps and provide music to people in their areas.

On Sunday 4 Seasons and Upbeat entertained fans as they played popular jazz standards as well as songs of their own, much to the appreciation of the crowd.

Upbeat and 4 Seasons are two of the winning bands of this programme, and they demonstrated why they were declared winners last year.

Those who missed this particular gig do not have to despair because these two top bands and a guest band from the area will perform at the Sharpeville Exhibition Centre, in Sharpeville, on March 7.
