Stadium now white elephant

THE Thohoyandou Stadium - which used to be the home of National First Division outfit Black Leopards - has fallen into disrepair.

This after the local municipality allegedly failed to maintain the facility that used to host matches, for the past two years.

The Thulamela municipality had allegedly set aside more than R2million to renovate the stadium, but a recent visit shows that it has become dilapidated. The grass has been left to grow knee-high from the entrance to the dressing rooms and under the old grand stand.

With the possibility of Leopards returning to the Absa Premiership next season, the club will probably have to look for another home ground. Lidoda Duvha have been using Tshifulanani Stadium - the 3000-seat venue not far from the Thohoyandou Stadium.

Leopards general manager Sam Khaphathe said: "The Thohoyandou Stadium is our home and it pains us to see the stadium in such a shocking state. Our supporters are here and want to see us playing here."

Municipality spokesperson Ndwamato Tshiila said yesterday they did not have the money to rehabilitate the stadium.
