Sergeant Hastings Chaane said the couple were allegedly involved in a heated argument inside their house at about 3am.
The husband allegedly grabbed a panga and hacked his wife several times on the upper body. Their neighbours heard the noise and called the police.
The wife was rushed to Mmametlhake Hospital in a serious condition, where she was certified dead on arrival.
Chaane said that the couple have allegedly had a few physical fights in the past several months.
He said the wife once opened a case of assault against her husband, but she later withdrew it.
Chaane said the husband was arrested by the police at his home at about 6am yesterday. He is expected to appear in the Themba magistrate's court today to face a charge of murder. - Sapa
