Brave boy in jungle world

THERE has been a lull in children's theatre since the beginning of the year, what with schools opening and pupils preparing for the new term.

THERE has been a lull in children's theatre since the beginning of the year, what with schools opening and pupils preparing for the new term.

But with the People's Theatre opening their season with a production of The Jungle Book, it is time once again for the little ones to enjoy themselves.

The children can join Mowgli and his friends in this time-tested tale of bravery and inner strength that will burst on to the stage during March and April.

Rudyard Kipling's classic story will once again be brought to life by co-directors Jill Girard and Keith Smith.

Set designer Marius Boshoff has created a spectacular jungle environment that explodes to transport the audience into this exciting environment.

Special sound effects colour this larger-than-life jungle into a wonderland jam-packed with everyone's favourite characters.

Laughter, adventure, song and dance take the audience on a journey, memorable to the last moment when Mowgli finally returns to the man village.

This much-loved tale tells of Mowgli, the little boy who grew up in the wild, cared for by wild animals.

But, pitting our child hero against baddies that everyone loves to hiss at, Mowgli has to outwit the evil tiger Shere Khan (Chris van Rensburg) and the python Kaa (Sama Yoyo).

Audiences will also meet characters such as the larger-than-life Baloo the bear (Solomon Cupido) and Bagheera the panther (André Lotter).

The interactive nature of the show means that audience participation is carefully orchestrated and encouraged.

As with all Peoples Theatre productions, Mowgli's journey from the jungle to the man village will involve the young audience and immerse them in action to give them a magical theatre experience.

Opening on March 8 at the Peoples Theatre at the Joburg Theatre complex in Braamfontein, the Jungle Book is set to fire up children's imaginations with its engaging plot and positive educational messages about courage and strength of character.

Performances take place at 9am and 11am on weekdays, and at 10.30am and 2.30pm on Saturdays, selected Sundays, and during school holidays.

Special school performances are available at discounted prices.

Tickets are available at Computicket or you can phone (011) 403-1563/2340.

There are also performances on the following Sundays and public holidays - Monday, March 22; Friday, April 2; Monday, April 5; and Sunday, April 18.
