Naming street after Modise was wrong

THOUGH having left Meadowlands almost three decades ago to live in another area, I am still a regular visitor to the township since I have family and friends living there.

I get annoyed and angry each time I enter the township at the Mzimhlophe Hostel entrance.

My blood pressure goes up when I see the name Reverend Frederick Modise - the new name of Vincent Road. Who decided Vincent Road must be named after Modise?

Don't jump to conclusions. I am not suggesting the name should not have been changed. In any event, who is this fellow called Vincent? What was the rationale behind naming this famous street after Modise?

When you name a street, building or bridge there are certain factors you take into consideration. The person after whom the street, bridge or building is named must be known for his good deeds and also have contributed to the welfare of the community, be it in education, sports, music, religion and civic activities.

Streets in Orlando were named after people who contributed to the welfare of the community. Orlando has a street named after Reverend OSD Mooki for his contribution to the township.

What was Modise's contribution to the community of Meadowlands? Absolutely nothing.

I wonder how many Meadowlands people have seen him in person. He was only seen in his flashy cars, flaunting his wealth. Where was he from 1976 to 1989 when Meadowlands, like other townships in Soweto, was fighting the apartheid regime?

If the name has not yet been gazetted I would implore that it be changed.
