IN A last ditch effort to boost health service provision in KwaZulu-Natal, the heath department has launched a drive to lure back nurses who left the public service for greener pastures abroad.
The department will adopt an aggressive campaign to entice health workers to return.
The department recently unfroze more than 1000 critical health posts that includes doctors, nurses and other health support staff.
The province has a high shortage of health professionals that include ophthalmic, theatre, midwives, and primary health care nurses. The department has only 57 ophthalmic staff at the moment.
Yesterday, provincial health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo said they started a campaign to recruit especially skilled nurses.
South African nurses and doctors had been a target for other international countries for years and they left after promises of better paying jobs.
But others had not been pleased by the working conditions overseas and opted to come back home and they have no jobs.
Health department head Sibongile Zungu said the department wants all qualified nurses to register with the South African Nurses Professional Council.
