COPE Youth Movement in KwaZulu-Natal has expressed concern with the government's "shoot to kill" statements in dealing with crime.

This comes amid a claim by its provincial chairperson, Mthokozisi Myende, that a VIP police officer had pointed a gun at him on Tuesday.

The movement's provincial secretary, Ntuthuko Dumakude, said the Criminal Procedure Act had never being amended to allow police the use of maximum force on all occasions.

"Thus far, innocent South Africans pay the price of this ridiculous call of "shoot to kill" - which is completely criminal on the government's part.

"How many more innocent people should suffer under this"?

"We noted with great disappointment that President Jacob Zuma did not even explain during his State of the Nation Address what 'shoot to kill' meant."

Myende said he had pulled over at an accident scene when a Mercedes Benz driven by a VIP officer also stopped.

"He drew his firearm and came straight to me. He then accused me of having abruptly stopped. I thank my lucky stars that he did not shoot."

A case of pointing a firearm and crimen injuria has been opened with the police.

"As Cope's youth movement, we feel this 'shoot to kill' nonsense is creating confusion in our police force," Myende said.

"We therefore urge the government to halt this as it is not benefiting innocent people."
