The current record, which the pencil-slim Masehla set at the 2007 All Africa Games in Algeria, stands at 9min:55,11sec.
Masehla is one of the top South African athletes who will be seen in action in the first leg of the 2010 Yellow Pages series in Port Elizabeth tomorrow.
"I will be doing the 3000m steeplechase in Port Elizabeth and I have been training hard. I'm looking forward to an exciting race," Masehla said yesterday.
"The plan for the first part of this year is to improve my record in a few months' time. It's been hanging in there for a long time now. I'm looking at setting a new national record during the fourth leg of the series in Stellenbosch, which is where I first set the record of 9min:57sec in 2007 before going to Algeria.
"We also have the World Cross-Country event in Poland next month, but I will be starting at the Southern Africa championships in the Seychelles on February 27.
"I will be going to Kenya in July for the African Senior Championships, where the team to represent Africa at the World Cup will be selected.
"Africa has talent in abundance when it comes to athletics. Most top athletes in the world are from our continent.
"I also want to be part of that team. After the Kenya championships, all eyes will be on the Commonwealth Games in India in October and I want to be at my best to hoist my country's flag high," Masehla said.
