Cruel joke

STANLEY Philander's claim that he had won the R91m PowerBall jackpot would have been funny were it not for the effect it is likely to have on the rest of his family.

We know children can be cruel at times. So we can imagine the sniggers and giggling his children had to face on the playground at school because their father took the concept of "tata ma-chance" too literally and bet on numbers that had already been announced, hoping that nobody would notice.

Alarm bells should have sounded when he chose to pose for media pictures before he had claimed his prize.

Even if Philander believed that a moment in the spotlight would be worth a R91million, the cost to his family was not worth the gimmick.

Desperation and poverty can make people silly. But that is no excuse for Philander's behaviour.
