The South African Police Union has welcomed the R60billion allocated to police to improve their working conditions in the fight against crime.
In his Budget Speech yesterday, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan announced that police would get R60billion. Godhan said this would help in the fight against the "unacceptably high rates of crime".
Sapu general secretary Oscar Skommere told Sowetan that the union was happy about the allocation.
"We know that the money is not destined for salary increments but is there to better police officers' working conditions. However, a better paid worker is a better performing worker. We hope police Minister Nathi Mthethwa will be able to adequately remunerate police officers.
"It must be used towards giving police officers training. In that way, they will be able to do their job with dignity and serve the nation," Skommere said.
