Sarafina returns to SA theatres

MBONGENI Ngema'sBroadway hit Sarafina musical, is back and looking for new and fresh talent.

Ngema says he is looking for young talent to form part of the cast. Auditions for the musical start at KZN Music House in Durban on March 4 and 5. On March 11 and 12, Ngema will be at the Market Theatre in Newtown, Johannesburg.

Sarafina first opened at the Market Theatre in 1987 and subsequently went to the Lincoln Centre Theatre in New York, after which it moved to Broadway.

It ran for eight years on Broadway during its US Tour and had successful runs in Europe, Australia, Japan, Jamaica and other parts of the world.

To date, Sarafina is the biggest and most successful musical to be produced in Africa.

It was later filmed as a motion picture starring Leleti Khumalo, Whoopi Goldberg, Somizi Mhlongo, Baby Cele-Mabuza, Miriam Makeba, John Kani and Tertius Meintjies.

Khumalo received a Tony Award nomination, Best Featured Actress in a Musical as well as an NAACP Image Award for her Broadway portrayal of the title character. The production was also nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Choreography and Best Direction of a Musical.

For the past 23 years since its inceptionSarafina has been a motivational centre piece for millions of aspiring actors, singers and dancers around the world.

As part of the cultural celebrations for 2010, Sarafina will once more be viewed by thousands of visitors who will grace our shores during the Soccer World Cup.
