KWAITO star Mandoza was so traumatised by the 2008 accident in which two men died that he hardly ever drives himself.
"He is always a passenger. Whether he is with his friends or with me, he never drives," his manager Curwyn Eaton said yesterday.
Mandoza, real name Mduduzi Tshabalala, was involved in a car crash on JG Strijdom Road in Weltevreden Park on the West Rand on Sunday morning.
At the time it was believed he had been driving the Mini Cooper that crashed into a palm tree.
But on Monday, police said they believed he was not the driver. He was found sitting in the back seat, his clothes covered in blood and his forehead bleeding profusely.
Johannesburg Metro police spokesperson Inspector Edna Mamonyane said there was no blood on the front seats.
The car's owner, Nkululeko Bobo Mncube, later claimed he had not given Mandoza permission to drive his car.
Mamonyane said Mandoza, 31, was not drunk and that police at the scene said Mncube reeked of alcohol. They had not opened a case against Mandoza, as advised by the investigating officer.
Police have been keen to talk to Mncube but his phone has been off since Sunday.
In March 2008, Mandoza crashed his Chrysler SRT into the back of a VW Jetta on the N1 North near the Beyers Naude Drive off-ramp, killing colleagues Felix Thebe and Charles Shabalala. He was found guilty on two counts of culpable homicide and was given a suspended sentence of three years and nine months. He also had to compensate the two families.
Eaton said yesterday: "It was a big shock for me when I heard about Sunday's accident. I asked myself, how did this happen? He still speaks about the 2008 accident."
He said Mandoza's Haiti concert, which was scheduled for May, could be postponed as a result of the latest accident.
"For now, we are focusing on his wellbeing. If he recovers in time, the show will go on."
Mandoza's wife Mpho said her husband was recovering well at home.
Police spokesperson Captain Lydia Mtila-Dikolomela said a case of reckless and negligent driving had been opened.
