IT'S been quite a week for Proteas batsman Alviro Petersen.

IT'S been quite a week for Proteas batsman Alviro Petersen.

Appointed captain for the Highveld Lions last Monday, he has followed this up by scoring a Test century on debut against India in the current match being played at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Petersen is only the third South African to achieve this milestone - after Jacques Rudolph and Andrew Hudson.

Batting with Hashim Amla at the other end, Petersen took on the Indian attack like a seasoned international. South African cricket fans will be hoping that the ton on the sub-continent will be his first of many more to come.

The fact that he made his debut and achieved this milestone at the ripe age of 29 is a shining example to other sportsmen and women that perseverance pays off.

What we need now is for him to repeat his first innings heroics when he bats again in South Africa's second innings. Impossible? Let's wait and see.
