JOMO Cosmos's search for the nine points they hope will save them from relegation begins tonight against Ajax Cape Town at Athlone Stadium in the Mother City.

Ezenkosi's chances of survival were dealt a heavy blow when they went down 1-0 to Bloemfontein Celtic last week. To make matters worse, fellow relegation candidates Mpumalanga Black Aces won their match against Maritzburg United to move three points clear of Cosmos.

Cosmos will be up against the wall when they face the Urban Warriors, who also lost last week at the hands of Moroka Swallows.

The visitors' captain, Avril Phali, said if they could get the nine points, they would stand a very good chance of avoiding the drop. It will be interesting to see if they can win three games in a row at this stage of the season.

Phali also believes that a return to "our robust style of play" will help Cosmos in their quest to beat the drop.

Young players such as Bongani Theletsane will have to quickly adjust to the rigours that will come with a relegation scrap.

Ajax, on the other hand, have had an indifferent season, described by left-back Brett Evans as "the most up and down season ever".

Coach Foppe de Haan has not had an ideal start to his career at Ajax and will be hoping for a strong finish to the league. They will see tonight's game as a chance to cement their place in the top eight.

Thulani Serero has come of age and will once again have hopes pinned on him. On paper, Ajax should not have too much trouble dismantling a Cosmos side that is probably low on confidence, but football can be a funny game.
