Daisy Makwea, a pupil at Dr AMS Makunyane Secondary School, allegedly assaulted a female teacher at the school on Friday.
The teacher had allegedly refused Makwea re-entry to her class after she had gone out to drink water without asking for permission.
Makwea, 19, allegedly became agitated and grabbed the teacher by the collar and dragged her to the school's quad. They were observed by many teachers and pupils.
Makwea then allegedly assaulted the teacher. A male teacher is alleged to have tried to intervene but Makwea was allegedly too powerful to be subdued.
It was only after another teacher came to the rescue that they were able to contain her. Makwea then allegedly hurled insults at the teachers.
The department said it had since ordered the principal to speed up the disciplinary process against the pupil.
Makwea has represented the school in several singing competitions and won trophies.
It is not known what led to her absenteeism yesterday.
Principal Frans Maake confirmed having summoned Makwea's parents to the school but said they too had failed to honour the appointment.
"We are moving with the programme to ensure that the matter is attended to as per the instruction from the provincial department of education," Maake said.
Sowetan has learnt that Makwea's mother failed to pitch up because her husband was not feeling well and she had taken him to a doctor for treatment.
Education department spokesperson Ndo Mangala, said they were waiting for a report from the school.
