LION of Gaza, a tale of heroism and sacrifice told through a play, is set to open at the Windybrow Theatre, Johannesburg.

LION of Gaza, a tale of heroism and sacrifice told through a play, is set to open at the Windybrow Theatre, Johannesburg.

Written and directed by Dan Seroba the show will run from February 17 until February 28.

It boasts an interesting cast that includes Themba Hlongwane, Sindile Mathebula, Bennerth Ngobeni, Eunice Ngobeni, Tshepo, Kagiso Seroba and Rose Mabulu.

The show travels back to the 19th-century in Mozambique and was inspired by true historical events. Lion of Gaza tells the story of King Nghu-nghunyana of the Vatsonga nation.

This interesting tale is set in the Gaza region of Mozambique during the Portuguese occupation of the area.

King Nghunghunyana was the grandchild of the great Zulu warrior Soshangane, who broke away from King Shaka to carve out a new empire in Mozambique.

But Nghunghunyana's attempts at defeating foreign encroachment in Africa both diplomatically and militarily were stymied when he was betrayed by those closest to him.

He was captured and deported to Portugal, were he later died. Ten years after Mozambique's independence the Portuguese president finally returned King Nghunghunyana's remains to Mozambique, handing them over to then president Samora Machel.

Lion of Gaza aims to entertain while it informs about a significant chapter in Africa's history.

Performances are on Tuesdays to Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 3pm. Tickets cost R45 from Tuesdays to Thursdays, and R55.
