THE Makhado municipality in Limpopo has, in a bid to help stem unemployment, offered a total of R255000 to 17 students to further their studies at tertiary institutions.
The municipality said it had decided to partner with parents who were struggling to pay for their children's education because it had realised it was faced with skills shortages in some areas.
Makhado mayor Mavhungu Luruli said if they failed to help parents with their children's education it would create problems that would also also affect the municipality.
Luruli said crime and poverty were overcome by education and by giving bursaries to students the council hoped to "help solve the problems".
The bursaries, according to the municipality, have become part of the annual budget expenditure. The aim is to address challenges faced by communities in the municipal area.
One of the beneficiaries, Ndivhuwo Mmbubana, an accounting science student at the University of Pretoria, said she was glad that the council had given her a bursary.
She said her father, a teacher, had been struggling to pay for her education and that of her two siblings who were at otheruniversities.
The municipality is also trying to convince the business community in the area to establish the Makhado Education Trust that will be responsible for funding students from poor families who wanted to further their studies.
