MAMELODI Sundowns fluffed a golden opportunity to join SuperSport United at the top of the log after playing to a goalless draw with Santos at Super Stadium in Pretoria yesterday.

Sundowns are still second on 52 points from 22 games, while Matsatsantsa a Pitori are chasing their third successive Absa Premiership title.

Santos finished the game with 10 men after Bonginkosi Macala was sent off by referee Joseph Frolick in the 63rd minute, five minutes after replacing Romano Scott.

This was after Macala had fouled Sundowns striker Katlego "Killer" Mphela.

Sundowns players will share R10million first prize if they win the league while Matsatsantsa will share half that amount mong themselves if they retain the league title.

The Brazilians put up a great performance from the onset yesterday as they literally camped in the People's Team's territory in search of goals.

The combination of Lebohang Mokoena and Elias Pelembe was a marvel to watch, despite the fact that Sundowns had clearly left their scoring boots at Chloorkop.

Downs' first real scoring opportunity came in the 10th minute, but Mphela's close-range strike was blocked by goalkeeper Tshepo Motsoeneng. In the process, Motsoeneng sustained an injury and was subsequently replaced by Lee Langerveldt.

Santos missed a scoring chance in the 35th minute when veteran defender Musa Otieno narrowly shot wide with only goalie Brian Baloyi to beat.
