Sowetan took to the streets to find out how Joburgers celebrated this special day.
Brenda Mpofu from Diepsloot said this day meant she had to be with the person she loved most, and that was her 11-year-old son Darlington.
"He is my love. We've just finished shopping for clothes and from here we are going to the zoo. He is my Valentine, we will spend this whole day together," she said.
In Randburg, Nomalanga Moyo was still shopping for a present for her husband of 10 years.
After browsing through almost every item available, she finally settled on a red-and-white mug stuffed with chocolates, with a little teddy bear on top. She also decided a red rose was a good idea.
"This is for my husband and father of my two children. I want to show him how much I love him. Later we will go to the cinema but I will only give him the present at night in the bedroom," Moyo said.
Edmund Ndou, a street vendor, uses the day for lovers to his advantage every year. Normally he sells belts and sunglasses but yesterday his table only had items to do with love and Valentine's Day.
"Picture frames with love messages are selling best. Mostly it is women who come here to buy, I don't think most men believe in Valentine's Day," he said.
