Tumelo Thagane of North West is one of the promising stars who will take part in the first leg of the 2010 Yellow Pages Series in Port Elizabeth on February 19. Thagane will also use the six-leg series to prepare for the national championships in Durban on March 20 and 21. The 25-year-old is a childhood friend of Mokoena, who won silver in the long jump at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
Mokoena and Thagane grew up together in Ratanda, Heidelberg, and were guided by coach and Nigel schoolteacher Elna de Beer.
Thagane has monopolised the triple jump at tertiary institutions, which saw him represent University Sport South Africa (Ussa) at the World Student Games in Serbia last June. The pencil-slim Thagane has won Ussa's triple jump national title for three consecutive years.
Renowned athletes like Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, Ruben Ramolefi, Janice Josephs and Elizna Naude will also be in action in Port Elizabeth.
"I will be doing the 1 500m event in Port Elizabeth as part of my training for the World Indoor Games in Doha (Qatar) next month," said Mulaudzi. He is also planning an assault on the African Senior Track and Field Championships in Kenya in July.
