Ramaala front runner in CGA

RENOWNED South African runner Hendrick Ramaala is set to take over as president of Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA).

RENOWNED South African runner Hendrick Ramaala is set to take over as president of Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA).

Athletics South Africa's most powerful province will elect new leaders at Germiston Stadium on February 27.

"Ramaala is the right person to lead Central Gauteng Athletics," said athletes' representative Sam Mlangeni.

Ramaala, who could not be reached for comment, is serving on the interim ASA board after the dissolution of the executive committee over Caster Semenya's gender tests.

"We want to transform all athletics in South Africa, we are happy that we are already reaping the fruits of having athletes on the ASA interim board," said the influential Mlangeni.

"We also want (former 800m runner) Oupa Maruping to be on the CGA board because he is doing very well at Vorentoe Hoërskool in Auckland Park in terms of developing athletics. There are other athletes like Ruben Ramolefi and Mbulaeni Mulaudzi who will definitely do a good job on the board of CGA."

Sowetan can reveal that Mlangeni will also join the new board. Other current and former athletes also being lobbied include Boycie Ntlwane and Arnaud Malherbe.
