"(Frank) Nabolisa has indicated his intention to apply for bail during his first appearance," said NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga yesterday.
Nabolisa's co-accused, Cwele, the wife of State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele, will appear in court on the same day, he said. Cwele's husband attended her previous court appearance.
Cwele, who was granted R100000 bail last Friday, and Nabolisa face charges of dealing or conspiring to deal in drugs; procuring a woman called Charmaine Moss to collect drugs in Turkey; and procuring another woman, Tessa Beetge, to smuggle 9kg of cocaine from South America.
Brazilian police arrested Beetge in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on June 13 2008. They found 9,2kg of cocaine concealed in her baggage. She is serving an eight-year jail sentence in Sao Paulo for drug trafficking.
Nabolisa, who was arrested in December on different charges, briefly appeared in a Johannesburg court immediately after his arrest. Today will be his first court appearance in connection with the Cwele case.
He said Cwele would probably not have to attend the whole Nabolisa bail application.
"She is likely to be given a date to come back to court," Mhaga said.
It was recently reported that Hibiscus Coast Municipality had decided not to suspend Cwele, who is the municipality's director of health. - Sapa
