Sharks out to shred the Chiefs

THE Sharks hope to start the Vodacom Super 14 campaign with a bang when they host the Chiefs from New Zealand in the opening match of the competition in Durban on Saturday.

THE Sharks hope to start the Vodacom Super 14 campaign with a bang when they host the Chiefs from New Zealand in the opening match of the competition in Durban on Saturday.

Sharks coach John Plumtree admits that this year is going to be a great challenge for his boys to make amends for last year's disappointment.

This after the KwaZulu-Natal outfit failed to collect the silverware on offer from both the Super 14 and Absa Currie Cup competitions.

Plumtree said: "We know we let ourselves down last year. We worked hard to get into good positions and then failed to produce. But it galvanised us and the players have learned. Hopefully we will see a different edge to the group, not just on Saturday but right throughout the season.

"We have a good squad and if everyone plays to potential, and the team plays to its potential, we will be fine.

"Last year we started off the back of a Currie Cup win and rocked on from that. But when things went pear-shaped, we didn't know how to react."

The Sharks starting line-up to face last year's finalist Chiefs will be announced today.
