Mthethwa aims in wrong direction

MINISTER of Police Nathi Mthethwa, speaking at Isiphingo, Durban, said police wanted to ensure that firearms only "rested with law enforcement agencies at the end of the day".

DA's Dianne Kohler Barnard, however, recently stated that 4000 pistols ordered by the SAPS are "mostly to replace lost and stolen firearms". And Mthethwa wants only these people to have firearms? There are negative effects of having firearms in a society, like the shooting by the police of Olga Kekana, the hairdresser thought to be a hijacker. But one has to consider the fact that the positive effects of firearms carried by citizens in a society far outweigh the negative.
