Hard-up mom wins million in competition

IT WAS a case of a windfall coming at the right time for Maria Nkosana*.

Nkosana, 31, an unemployed mother of one won.

R1 million from a competition called Yebo Millionaires, sponsored by cellphone company Vodacom.

The competition, which is screened live every Tuesday on SABC 1, requires contestants to send SMS entries to a particular number.

Maria has been sending her SMS entries since the inception of the competition in 2005.

Her perseverance was finally rewarded last Tuesday when she became a winner.

An elated Maria told Sowetan: "I am very happy. It's as if I am in a dream.

On that fateful, Tuesday, I could hardly sleep or eat because of of ethe excitement.

The money has come at the right time for us as a family.

We are struggling to make ends meet and we have to rely on my son's social grant of R240."

She confessed that she was not even watching the programme when she received a call from Vodacom informing her that she was the winner.

"I was glued to my favourite soapie on another channel when I got a call from Paula Malekane of Vodacom and I was just over the moon with joy" she said.

"Though I had always anticipated winning, I did not for one moment expect to win such a huge amount. I expected to win maybe R200000, not an amount as huge as R1 000 000.

Her immediate plans are to continue her studies
