faulty toyotas listed
AFTER weeks of speculation over which Toyota models in South Africa have been affected by the faulty accelerator, Toyota SA yesterday released a list of the affected models.
Corolla leads the pack with over 45000 units bearing the faulty accelerator mechanisms.
According to Toyota SA the company was satisfied with all its investigations relating to the SA models.
A total of 52546 units in SA have been identified as having the fault.
The affected passenger vehicle models are:
Toyota Corolla (February 2007 to January 2010) - 45040 vehicles;Toyota Auris (June 2006 to January 2010) - 6665 vehicles; Toyota Verso (October 2008 to January 2010) - 841 vehicles.
According to Toyota SA the Corolla, Auris and Verso would be recalled as part of a service campaign to correct a potentially faulty accelerator pedal mechanism.
Toyota SA Motors chose to participate in the worldwide recall as a precaution, though the problem has not surfaced to the same extent in this climate as it has elsewhere.
Toyota SA has since the first announcement of its participation received a few requests from concerned owners and will study each case to establish whether the problem has indeed surfaced locally.
Toyota SA president and CEO Johan van Zyl has apologised to customers. "We value the trust and confidence Toyota owners have put in our brand over the past five decades and we will do everything in our power to honour that."
Toyota will start contacting customers of the affected vehicles, including those from neighbouring countries. These include Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland.
The corrective action should take less than an hour, depending on how busy the dealer is.
The carmaker has assured customers that all costs would be borne by Toyota , regardless of the state of the service plan, warranty or the vehicle's ownership status.
