Lawyers request video tape

LAWYERS representing three men accused of conspiring to kill a policeman investigating one of them for murder have asked to view video tapes of the alleged assassination plot before continuing with the bail application.

LAWYERS representing three men accused of conspiring to kill a policeman investigating one of them for murder have asked to view video tapes of the alleged assassination plot before continuing with the bail application.

Brothers Skhumbuzo and Khulekani Ngobese, and their business partner Albert Mnisi, were allegedly recorded while hatching a plan to kill the officer investigating Skhumbuzo's murder case.

The men wanted the investigating officer dead before January 6, which was the date of Skhumbuzo's bail application. His bail application was in connection with the murder of six-year-old Thabitha Mahlangu, who was shot and killed in Wattville, Ekurhuleni, last year.

The state alleges that Skhumbuzo, who owns taxis and a courier company and is a pastor, called his police friend from Modder B Prison to organise hitmen to kill the investigating officer because he was going to oppose bail.

The policeman allegedly informed the provincial office, which recruited two senior policemen from the West Rand as "hitmen".

"When the 'hitmen' came to see him in prison he promised them a car. But the 'hitmen' wanted cash," said Superintendent Mojalefa Dijenga.

The case continues on Friday.
