KZN police kill 5 more suspects

The Independent Complaints Directorate will investigate the gunning down of five men by police in Inanda, Durban, on Friday night.

Their killings have brought to seven the number of suspects killed by police in the province within 24 hours. Provincial police spokesperson Superintendent Jay Naicker said the police received a report about a house that was attacked by five men on Friday in Ohlange. He said the men fired shots outside the house before breaking in and removing a bed.

"The suspects were seen fleeing in a white Ford Bantam. Detectives spotted the vehicle near the Dube Mall in Ohlange," Naicker said.

He said when confronted, the men got out of the vehicle and opened fire on the police.

"There was an exchange of gunfire and all five suspects were fatally wounded. An Uzi automatic firearm and a shotgun were taken from the suspects. Fortunately none of the police were injured. All five men were in their thirties," he said.

Naicker said the police had opened cases of housebreaking and theft and attempted murder. He also said they would send the firearms for ballistic tests.

ICD national spokesperson Moses Dlamini said yesterday: "At this stage I can confirm that we are investigating."

The killings followed those on Thursday in which three men allegedly opened fire on policemen as they confronted them in Thornville. The police said they had responded to information of a gang of armed men operating in the area and cornered the gang on the P334 in the Bainesfield area.

Naicker said the men got out of the vehicle and opened fire on police. Police returned the fire, fatally wounding two of the men while a third was seriously injured.

"These men were wanted for a series of robberies, car hijacking, theft of motor vehicles and house breaking in the Thornville-Camperdown area," he said.
