Resurgent Ajax a poser for Downs

AJAX Cape Town's 2-0 midweek win was probably a major morale booster for the club, who host Mamelodi Sundowns in an Absa Premiership match at Athlone Stadium on Sunday.

The Urban Warriors seem to have put the hard times behind them since their 6-0 whipping by Lamontville Golden Arrows in the final of the MTN8 set off a disastrous string of defeats for them.

Ajax are looking more like their old selves and were clinical on Wednesday in their disposal of Platinum Stars at home, a result that Sundowns would have noted with interest.

The Brazilians, on the other hand, have to recover their mojo as soon as possible after their draw with Bloemfontein Celtic.

Coach Hristo Stoichkov admitted that luck was on his side, courtesy of referee Charl Theron and his assistants: "Yes, we were lucky, but then Mabhuti Khenyeza got a red. It was harsh - the referee should not have given him the first yellow because it was a 50-50 situation."

As log leaders and defending champions SuperSport failed to extend their lead, Ajax will have to beware a Sundowns team determined to topple their neighbours. Kickoff is at 3.30pm.

l Platinum Stars engage Santos at Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace tomorrow at 3.30pm in a match that might just add to Dinaledi's blues.

The Cape side have been quietly keeping up with the log leaders, a position they won't easily relinquish.
