Bouwer leads the way

CAROL Bouwer is a trendsetter. From being a television presenter to owning a production house, she has always been ahead of her peers.

CAROL Bouwer is a trendsetter. From being a television presenter to owning a production house, she has always been ahead of her peers.

Bouwer has now invested in horses and one of them was running in the J&B Met. So why the horses, I asked?

"My husband was into horses and I always moaned about this. Eventually I saw the light. Instead of complaining, I embraced his hobby," she said.

"Edward bought the first horse in 2003. Unfortunately it died last year. It had raced in Durban, doing well, though it was plagued by injuries.

"That's when we took it for breeding. It did not disappoint, it had a filly which my eight-year-old son, Dante, named Speedy Gondante. It raced at the Met on Saturday.

"Speedy Gondante started racing at two and won at the Met last year."

Bouwer revealed that they have other horses. Desert Link is racing in Singapore at the moment. "It's one of the four horses we are part-owners of. The other four belong exclu sively to us and our partners.

"Owning horses is frivolous but the truth is that it's fun.

"As a loner who stays in the house when not working, events such as the Met give me an opportunity to catch up with friends.

"I have come to love horses so much that I have been to Australia and Dubai when one of the horses was racing."
