Sono launches boxing education programme

LONG-SERVING boxing administrator Stanley Sono has hit the ground running.

A few weeks ago Sono was appointed by Boxing South Africa (BSA) to impart his knowledge to aspiring referees and judges. He told Sowetan yesterday that the full programme of boxing education and training had been drawn up and would take place in all the provinces.

"It will include the education of boxers and trainers on the rules and regulations of boxing, the upgrading and training of ring officials and it will begin in Gauteng on February 20 and 21 at Nasrec Arena," he said.

The programme will be for all registered boxers and ring officials.

"Preference will be given to officials with amateur refereeing and judging experience and hand-picked ex-pro boxers.

"The programme's aims and objectives are to bring uniformity in the implementation of BSA's rules and regulations. A manual will be drawn up to educate people, including the media, in the use of terminology.

"A boxer was knocked down. When he got up the referee applied the mandatory count of eight, but a journalist called it a standing eight count. We want to correct this."

Sono said other workshops would take place in Limpopo on February 27 and 28, in the Eastern Cape on March 27 and 28, in the Western Cape on April 10 and 11, in KwaZulu-Natal on April 17 and 18, in Free State on May 8 and 9, in Mpumalanga on May 22 and 23, in North West on June 5 and 6, and in Northern Cape on June 12 and 13.

"They will be held in collaboration with the service providers in each province by elected coordinators," said Sono, who will be in charge of Mpumalanga, Limpopo and North West. Alfred Buqwana and David van Niewenhuizen will be in charge in Gauteng.

These appointments were made last month after BSA acting chief executive Loyiso Mtya had expressed concern about the poor standard of officiating in boxing in the country.
