Reduce price

SPARE a thought for the granny who has to feed and grow two school-going children.

SPARE a thought for the granny who has to feed and grow two school-going children.

They survive on a loaf of bread - on a lucky day. For at least seven days in a month the gran and siblings have to make do with soft porridge, thanks to the kilogram of mealie meal she had the sense to buy when she got her pensioner's grant.

One would expect people with hearts, especially those making millions from the likes of pensioners, to be ready to make life a bit easier for unfortunate souls.

Instead the Pioneer group, one of the biggest bakeries in the country, has seen fit to cheat people like this granny.

Yesterday Pioneer was fined R197,7million for its role in price fixing in 2006, only about 10 percent of its turnover that year.

The punishment is not enough. Let us see the price of bread being reduced. That is the only way to hit these heartless money-grubbers where it hurts most - and ease the burden of the poor.
