Hijacker dies in crash

A SUSPECTED hijacker died and his accomplice was injured when the vehicle they had hijacked in Berea Road, Durban, collided with a truck before overturning on the N3 Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

A SUSPECTED hijacker died and his accomplice was injured when the vehicle they had hijacked in Berea Road, Durban, collided with a truck before overturning on the N3 Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said the men were allegedly making their escape in a stolen VW Polo on the N3 when the driver lost control in wet weather.

"The vehicle left the road and rolled repeatedly, ejecting one of the men before coming to rest beneath the bridge."

Wicks said paramedics arrived to find a critically injured man in the wreckage of the car.

"Paramedics stabilised him before taking him to Addington Hospital under police guard."

The suspect's accomplice was killed on impact on the scene.

In a separate accident a coat hanger vendor was killed and four people injured in an accident involving two cars and the vendor on the N2 North bound carriageway south of the Inanda Road Bridge.

The man was crossing the N2 when he was struck by a car, Wicks said. Another vehicle was unable to stop in time and collided with the first vehicle.
