Suspected ATM gang arrested

POLICE in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday made a major breakthrough when they arrested four men allegedly on their way to bomb an ATM in Mandeni on the North Coast.

POLICE in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday made a major breakthrough when they arrested four men allegedly on their way to bomb an ATM in Mandeni on the North Coast.

The men were found with a load of explosives yesterday morning.

Provincial police spokesperson Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said the National Intelligence Services and Durban's organised crime unit from Cato Manor were following up information about the intended robbery when they arrested the suspects in their vehicle. The police spotted the suspects' car on the M25 near Durban North.

"The car fitted the description given to them. It was a blue Mazda with Gauteng registration plates," Mdunge said.

"Police stopped the car. Three men jumped out and tried to flee, while one drew a firearm and tried to shoot the police.

"But the police managed to shoot back, wounding the armed man, and arrested the other three suspects."

Mdunge said said the men were found in possession of explosives, an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

"The wounded suspect is in hospital under police guard and the other three are in police custody.

"They are expected to appear in the Durban magistrate's court tomorrow (today)," Mdunge said.

Provincial Police Commissioner Mamonye Ngobeni congratulated the police officers who made the arrests.

"I must praise the police for an excellent job. Their hard work will certainly decrease ATM bombings in the province," he said.
