A 44-YEAR-OLD Free State police sergeant was arrested after his wife found a woman's body under his bed while he was sleeping, police said yesterday.

Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said the alarm was raised by the couple's nine-year-old daughter.

She phoned her mother at work after her father refused to let her into his room, where she had seen a human leg protruding from beneath the bed.

The woman arrived home at 6.45pm on Monday, immediately went to investigate and found the body of a naked woman under the bed on which her husband was sleeping.

The policeman woke up, became angry and told his wife to fetch a box of matches from the kitchen, said Mophiring.

The woman ran to her neighbours, off-duty police officers, who arrived to find the body of a woman on the dining room floor.

Mophiring said the sergeant was immediately arrested.

He said a postmortem would be conducted to determine the woman's cause of death.

The woman's identity is not known as yet.

The policeman was expected to appear in the Phuthaditjhaba magistrate's court today to face charges of murder and rape. - Sapa
