Basketball revival gains pace

THE drive to revive basketball in Soweto is gathering momentum but organisers say they will not get too excited and rest on their laurels.

THE drive to revive basketball in Soweto is gathering momentum but organisers say they will not get too excited and rest on their laurels.

The sport, which was once popular in the township, lost its appeal in recent years.

But Jackie Masenya, who helped introduce basketball to Soweto, said an annual tournament, the Soweto Basketball Association Tournament, was being planned to get the youth involved once again.

"We are continuing with our road show on Saturday and Sunday at the Dube Boxing Club from 9am and we'd like to urge teams to come early," Masenya said.

Teams will play casual matches and can register for the tournament, though a date has not yet been set.

"We are happy because we have made some progress but there is still a lot of work to be done and we are inviting all basketball teams in Soweto to come through," Masenya said.

He said though they would like to see an all-Soweto tournament, the door was not closed for teams from other areas.

A registration fee of around R250 a team has been proposed, though nothing has been finalised.
