The Mating Game explores the personal lives of four independent women who, despite all their achievements, are struggling with motherhood, love and friendship.
This is a new breed of women who have it all. They are bright, independent, sexually liberated and frequently in conflict with the values of their more traditional parents.
In their long-awaited bid for freedom they have left most men scratching their heads and looking to the past for self-definition.
They are Grace played by Maggie Benedict, Roxanne (Renate Stuurman), Refilwe (Khabonina Qubeka) and Sara (Elma Postma).
They have different reasons for wanting to choose a life that's very different from that of their mothers.
They all come from different backgrounds and by the time they become buddies shifts in the social landscape have opened up possibilities for women in South Africa to compete more equally with their male counterparts.
Anita Khanna, the show's writer, says the inspiration for writing The Mating Game came from years of wondering why so many of my beautiful, fun-loving, intelligent and talented friends spend so much time searching for mates with little success.
"What's wrong with men, or rather, why are we women so hopelessly bad at choosing people to partner us," Khanna says.
"The series makes no secret of the fact that for most of us life is not complete without that very special person."
Khanna says by the end of the series, each of the women will have redefined what it means to be a mother, in some cases by drawing on the vast experience of elders.
