Nelson Makamo, a self-taught expressionist painter shares his views, experiences and thoughts about art in South Africa.
The painter hails from Modimolle, a small town in Limpopo.
He was born in 1982 and is the only child.
He completed his matric in 2000 at Modimolle High School.
He received a Johnson and Johnson Bursary and the Pinpointone Human Resources Scholarship towards printmaking. He has worked at the Artist Proof Studio after receiving his Certificate in Advanced Professional Printmaking in 2005. He had his first solo exhibition at the Obert Contemporary Art Gallery in Melrose Arch in Johannesburg in 2005.
Makamo has had several commissions for murals, has recently completed 10 paintings commissioned for Lekas Lekalakala's Chamber.
His paintings have been widely exhibited in South Africa and abroad.
Driven by the inspiration of his surroundings, Makamo is one of South Africa's fastest rising young artists.
"My work is my life, pain and joy from the first piece to the last piece," he said.
Makamo is currently working on a project he began last year January, A Place I Call Home, at Gallery on the Square.
