IFP deputy national spokesperson Thulasizwe Buthelezi will soon replace national chairperson Zanele Magwaza-Msibi as the mayor of the Zululand district municipality.
Party president Mangosuthu Buthelezi said this at the wedding of Thulasizwe his sweetheart, Nomthandazo Mzila on Saturday. Coincidentally, Mangosuthu Buthelezi is married to Irene Audrey Mzila (no relation).
A source at the wedding said: "Prince Buthelezi shocked us when he made the announcement because no one was expecting it.
"Generally, many people were assuming that Magwaza-Msibi's deputy, councillor Vusumuzi Osborne Mbuyisa, would take over but it looks like it's not going to be," the source said.
An employee at the Zululand district offices in Ulundi said they had also heard the rumours about Magwaza-Msibi's redeployment.
"At the moment, we don't know what's happening and we are just waiting to hear from them. But we have also heard that Buthelezi will be our new boss," he said.
Attempts to contact Buthelezi for comment were unsuccessful as he did not answer his cellphone.
Meanwhile, the national council of the IFP finally confirmed on Sunday the redeployment of Magwaza-Msibi to the provincial legislature.
The council said in a statement that it had resolved to redeploy Magwaza-Msibi as soon as possible from the position of mayor of the Zululand district municipality to the KwaZulu-Natal legislature.
This is where her name was originally put forward as a candidate in last year's provincial elections.
The statement added that the move would enable Magwaza-Msibi to take part in the deployment of IFP parliamentarians to constituencies and ensure that her services were retained for the benefit of the party beyond her second term as mayor.
Her term as mayor expires after the 2011 local government elections.
The council also called upon Magwaza-Msibi's supporters to "desist from further disorderly behaviour".
It said such behaviour by the supporters was threatening to divert public attention from the objectives of IFP parliamentarians' outreach programme, which was to listen to the concerns of constituents and take them up with the National Assembly and the provincial legislatures.
