A LIMPOPO radio station has suffered a crippling blow because of the death of a trusted presenter.
Capricorn FM, the province's only commercial radio station, is reeling from the hock after the death of Fanele Sibeko in a car accident at the weekend.
Sibeko, 33, was allegedly driving in the company of two women in Polokwane's Hans van Rensburg Street when he lost control of the car and hit a stationary vehicle on the side of the road.
The accident happened at about 3pm on Saturday.
Polokwane police spokesperson Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed yesterday that Sibeko died instantly.
He said one of the women was critically injured and was taken to an unidentified hospital in Johannesburg for treatment.
The other woman, according to Ngoepe, was treated at the Polokwane Hospital and discharged.
"We have opened a culpable homicide case in relation to the accident that killed the radio presenter and we hope to get to the real cause of the accident," Ngoepe said.
He said the stationary vehicle that Sibeko's car smashed into belonged to a police officer.
Sibeko was popular with the station's 1, 5million listeners for presenting the weekend show, Aku tleriwi - meaning no time to sleep - between 9pm and 12am on Fridays and Saturdays.
He also produced the afternoon drive show on weekdays, besides being the station's music manager.
Sibeko is the second member of the station to die since its establishment just more than two years ago.
In December the station was devastated by the passing away of Jackee Muleya, who died after an operation went wrong at a hospital in Pretoria.
"We are deeply saddened by the passing away of Sibeko. Our hearts and condolences to go his family, especially his mother, with whom he was very close," station chief executive Simphiwe Mdlalose said yesterday.
He said the Capricorn FM family would miss Sibeko's immense contributions to the station.
