"There are rumours in newspapers that there's a plan to unseat the premier. As far as we as the PEC are concerned there is no such thing," said Mashatile, who at one time held the post of premier.
He was reacting to reports that a group of ANC members aligned to him were behind the plot. Mashatile is deputy minster of arts and culture. He said that the provincial government was accountable to the provincial executive committee.
"When you are deployed you are deployed to do your work and do it properly. If the government is not doing its work the PEC must intervene, not interfere or micro-manage," he said.
The meeting officially launched the start of lobbying for the 2012 provincial elections. The ANC constitution requires branch members to nominate and lobby for their preferred candidates.
Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, who is also deputy chairperson of the ANC's provincial structure, said outgoing members should not campaign to be re-elected as this practice undermined the party's processes.
"No sitting member of the PEC or national executive committee must go to branches to ask them to vote for him or her," he told members. "Let members decide who to vote for."
Motlanthe said PEC members who campaigned for positions were taking "away the right of ANC members to elect". He urged members to adhere to the ruling party's guidelines during electioneering.
"You have people who say only the ANC deploys, but sometimes these very comrades do not expect to be deployed and want to chose positions [for themselves]," Motlanthe said.
He also called for unity within the structures of the ANC.
The party had a responsibility to unite its alliance with Cosatu and the SACP, he said.
"The ANC bears the responsibility to unite its structures. If we are united, we can unite the alliance and the country to a non-racial society," he told members.
No other organisation, Motlanthe said, could lead a united, nonracial, nonsexist society except the ANC. He said members of Cosatu and the SACP holding senior positions in the ruling party's structures and in the government gave the tripartite alliance strength. - Sapa
